Meadows Symphony Orchestra

  • Caruth Auditorium, Owens Art Center 6101 Bishop Blvd Dallas, TX, 75205 United States (map)

The program includes the Overture to The School for Scandal, Samuel Barber’s first composition for full orchestra; premiered in 1933, it captures the wit and energy of the 18th-century dramatic comedy that inspired it. International concert artist and Meadows professor of cello Andrés Díaz is guest soloist for the challenging Cello Concerto No. 2 by Russian composer Dmitry Kabalevsky, a stunning work of lyricism and pathos. Also featured is Sibelius’s remarkable Symphony No. 2, known for its sumptuous sounds and powerful passions, and characterized by the composer as “a struggle between death and salvation.”
